Headcount
Unduplicated declared-program counts by term
Headcount counts unique students with active declared program records by term. It lives under Explore -> Headcount.
Use it when you need program-based headcount over time: majors, minors, concentrations, or combinations of those filters. This is different from counting students sitting in a department’s courses; for course enrollment, use Enrollment. The Dept Dashboard also has program-based headline headcounts.
Filters
Set the filters, then click Update Headcount.

What’s counted
After each run, the strip under the filters says what the numbers count, read from the run itself rather than from the filters: which program types, which campuses (the student’s home campus), which terms (any term still in progress is named), how students were assigned to the department, how many pre-majors are included, and how to read totals across rows. A student in two programs counts in each program’s row, so rows do not add up to unique students.
When a department is selected, Headcount counts the programs that department owns, as the mapping files assign them: a concentration counts with the student’s primary major. Programs that share a name with one of the department’s own are not included. Dept Trends and the Dept Dashboard’s headcount cards use the same rule, so the three agree. A program still awaiting a mapping decision counts toward no department until it is decided.
With a department selected, the strip also lists the codes behind it, each program with its name: its course subject codes, program codes, accelerated online (X-prefix) codes, and pre-major codes with the program each leads to. A code that applies only in one college or at one course level says so. These are the rows in the institution mapping files, the same block Dept Trends and the Dept Dashboard show; Admin > Data & Usage > Mappings explains each.

Each point is a term. The count is unique students, not registrations.
Download
After running Headcount, use Download headcount CSV to export the summarized table behind the charts. The file includes the term code, readable term label, student level, program type, program or department fields where applicable, degree, and student count.
Methodology Notes
Program headcount. Unique students with matching Academic Studies program records in each term. Combined major, minor, and concentration filters require membership in the same term.
Exclusions. Records outside the institutional and program filters are excluded. Active program filters also exclude missing student IDs or terms. Combined filters display the primary selected program type (major, then minor, then concentration); secondary filters restrict membership. Multiple groups are not additive unique headcounts.
- Department is a program-row filter. Leave Department unselected when combining programs from different departments.
- Same-term membership means the declarations appear in the same Academic Studies term; it does not establish exact dates of overlap within that term.
- This is an exploratory program-record count, not a certified institutional headcount.
